The Auried Nature Reserve lies on the Saane near Kleinbösingen (FR) and is a fascinating mix of wet meadows, hedges, reeds and small bodies of water, created from a former gravel quarry.
It becomes especially lively in spring and early summer: Auried is home to one of Switzerland’s largest tree frog populations, and at dusk the characteristic “frog concerts” are a truly memorable natural experience.
With a little luck, you may also spot other amphibians, wading birds, dragonflies and many other small wild animals.
A themed trail starting at the information centre provides fascinating information about the flora and fauna, while the water’s edge and the observation tower offer particularly good opportunities for sightings.
To keep the landscape open, Pro Natura carries out maintenance work and uses Scottish Highland cattle to graze against scrub encroachment.
Auried is easily accessible, for example from Laupen via a walk along the channelled Saane (approx. 30–45 minutes).
Important for a respectful visit: stay on the paths, do not disturb the animals and keep dogs on a leash.
