The Ballenberg Open-Air Museum near Hofstetten bei Brienz is like a journey through rural Switzerland – outdoors, lively and surprisingly diverse.
The 66-hectare site features more than 100 original historic buildings from all parts of the country (as of 2026: 110), from farmhouses and workshops to stables and barns.
The craft demonstrations are particularly fascinating, allowing you to experience traditional skills first-hand.
There are also more than 200 farm animals, often including rare breeds – perfect for families and animal lovers.
As woodland, fields and farms alternate, the tour feels more like a leisurely outing through a cultural landscape than a traditional museum visit.
It is best to allow several hours (or even a whole day), as there is plenty to discover – including lovely picnic spots for taking a break.
Good to know: During the 2026 season, Ballenberg is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 from 9 April to 1 November.
