The St. Beatus Caves are spectacularly located above Lake Thun near Sundlauenen/Beatenberg and lead into a magically illuminated world of stalactites and stalagmites inside the mountain. Around 14 km of the cave system have been explored – approximately 1 km is safely accessible to visitors, so you should allow around 60 minutes for the tour.

Inside, the temperature remains a constant 8–10 °C with high humidity (approx. 95%) – a jacket and non-slip shoes are well worth bringing. The route is suitable for pedestrians only (not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs), but allows you to experience grottos, chambers and rock passages up close.

Before and after your visit to the cave, it is worth taking a look at the waterfall at the entrance – and in the Cave Museum you can learn more about the site, with admission included in the ticket price. If you like, you can combine your visit with a break at the on-site restaurant. The legend also adds to the atmosphere: Saint Beatus is said to have lived here and driven away a dragon – a wonderful myth for visitors young and old.
