Bellinzona, the capital of Ticino, is defined by a unique fortification complex: Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro tower above the old town. This ensemble of three castles, together with its walls and defensive structures, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

The complex was built in a strategic location to control the Ticino Valley and the important Alpine routes – which explains the impressive towers, gates and defensive lines.
The easiest place to start is the imposing Castelgrande, directly above the city, before continuing along well-maintained paths to Castello di Montebello. As a crowning finale, it is worth climbing to the highest castle, Sasso Corbaro, whose particularly expansive panorama rewards you with views over Bellinzona and the surrounding valleys.
