The Schleitheim Gypsum Museum in the canton of Schaffhausen is located in front of the region’s last accessible gypsum mine tunnel. Since 2011, it has been listed in the inventory of geotopes of national importance. In a very small space and as the only museum of its kind in Switzerland, it vividly illustrates the geological formation of gypsum, its mining, processing, properties and diverse uses in agriculture, construction, medicine and the arts, among other fields. A visit to the Gypsum Museum is appealing to anyone interested in the history of the Earth, historic mining in the region, the history of the Schleitheim gypsum trade and as an illustrative example of vocational studies in the construction and related industries. It is also suitable as a special highlight of a school trip, geology excursion, company outing, club or group excursion, or seniors’ trip. School classes and clubs can use the barbecue area and the adjoining seating. Upon special request, registered groups can enjoy an aperitif featuring Schleitheim specialities in the so-called Tonhalle inside the tunnel or outdoors. For individual visitors, the museum is open on specified dates.
