Rheinau Abbey is spectacularly situated on an island in a bend of the Rhine in the municipality of Rheinau (Canton of Zurich) and is one of the most impressive abbey complexes on the High Rhine.
The former Benedictine abbey was founded as early as the 8th/9th century and shaped the region for many centuries.
Particularly impressive is the Baroque abbey church with its striking twin-tower façade, which was renovated at the beginning of the 18th century.
Today, the island is a place of peace and culture: its buildings house, among other things, a House of Silence and the Rheinau Music Island.
Depending on the season, the church can be visited at set times; guided tours are available by arrangement (e.g. with restrictions during weddings).
A walk across the island is worthwhile even without a guided tour – the water, historic façades and unique setting create an almost meditative atmosphere.
As an excursion destination, a visit can ideally be combined with a riverside path along the Rhine or a detour to the small town of Rheinau.
