The walk from Zug to Walchwil is a particularly rewarding spring outing for cherry blossom fans. Between March and April, blossoming cherry trees line the route, while beautiful views across Lake Zug towards Rigi keep opening up. As the route largely resembles a leisurely walk, it can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace. It is therefore perfect for anyone who is not looking to rack up as many demanding metres of elevation as possible, but simply wants to enjoy nature in spring. At the end of the route, there is also a particularly recommended place to stop for foodies.
We had actually hoped for sunny spring weather on this outing. Instead, the sky was overcast. However, as we had already reserved a table at the restaurant at our destination several days earlier and I was looking forward to the delicious spring menu, we set off anyway. Once again, it was a good decision. We soon realised that this easy walk has its own appeal even without postcard-perfect weather.
The walk from Zug to Walchwil starts right at Zug railway station. From there, the signposts lead along Alpenstrasse to Vorstadtquai. The passage that follows via Fischmarkt and the Lower Old Town is particularly charming. Here, the hiking trail passes directly by Zug’s best-known landmark: the 52-metre-high Zytturm, which was once part of the town’s ring wall. I find that the narrow streets of Zug’s Old Town are almost even more appealing in rainy weather than in sunshine.
