The larch adorns the forests of Valais with magnificent colours in every season. At Balavaux Alp, there are more than 250 trees of this species, between 300 and 1,000 years old. The oldest tree has a circumference of 14 metres and is probably the largest in Europe. The hike begins with a gondola ride from Haute-Nendaz to Tracouet, a peak offering panoramic views over the entire Rhône Valley. From there, walk towards Lac Noir and then on to Cabane de Balavaux. The route then leads through the impressive larch forest. A purpose-built footbridge takes you to the largest larch, nicknamed “Roi de Balavaux”, or “King of Balavaux”. Continue to Le Chalet des Alpes restaurant. A path then takes you to the Saxon bisse, the longest in Valais. Once you reach the Pra de Dzeu clearing, return to the starting point via “La gouille d’Ouché” and “Les Rairettes”.
