Le Landeron is a charming medieval town in the canton of Neuchâtel, idyllically situated near Lake Biel and the Zihl Canal (Canal de la Thielle), which connects Lake Biel with Lake Neuchâtel. The fortified town was founded in the 14th century (from 1325 onwards) and was strategically important for controlling routes and waterways at the foot of the Jura Mountains.

Walking through one of the two gates, you enter a surprisingly well-preserved old town with a long main street and historic townscape. The central square, with its fountain and lime trees surrounded by old façades, is particularly atmospheric and ideal for a relaxing break.
A prominent landmark is the Tour-Porte de l’Horloge (Clock Gate), which defines the northern entrance to the old town.

Every year, the town also becomes a treasure hunter’s paradise: the “Brocante du Landeron” is considered Switzerland’s largest open-air antiques fair (usually held on the last full weekend in September).
