Madonna del Sasso in Orselina sits high above Locarno and is considered one of the most significant religious and historical sites in Ticino – as well as the most famous pilgrimage site in Italian-speaking Switzerland.
Its origins date back to a tradition from 1480: the Franciscan friar Fra Bartolomeo (Piatti/d’Ivrea) is said to have experienced an apparition of the Virgin Mary here, after which the first chapels and the core of the sanctuary were built.

Today, the site forms a Sacro Monte with a Stations of the Cross route and several chapels, making the ascent to the sanctuary a special walk. Once at the top, you’ll find an atmospheric square – and a terrace with panoramic views over Locarno, Lake Maggiore and the surrounding mountains.

You can reach the site either on foot via the historic path or comfortably by taking the Locarno–Madonna del Sasso funicular. Conveniently, in Orselina you are also close to the mountain railway towards Cardada/Cimetta – ideal if you want to combine your visit with a hike.

Inside, the church impresses with richly detailed decoration and a unique atmosphere blending art, history and spirituality.

An excursion here is therefore not only culturally fascinating, but also simply beautiful – especially if you take the time to pause and enjoy the views.
