Stand high above Europe’s largest waterfall, feel the roar of the water throughout your body – you can do this at Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen. By boat, you can reach castles, the Rhine Falls basin and even the mighty rock in the middle of the waterfall.

More than 15’000 years ago, Ice Age movements forced the Rhine into a new riverbed. Rhine Falls formed at the boundary between hard limestone and soft gravel. Several hundred cubic metres of water thunder 23 metres down every second across a width of 150 metres.

And right in the middle stands a mighty rock that has defied the elements for thousands of years. The rock can be reached on a Rhine Falls boat tour, allowing you to experience this natural spectacle from very close up. You can also stand almost in the middle of the waterfall on platforms built partly over the Rhine. Wörth and Laufen castles can be reached by boat, and the truly adventurous can even hire a canoe.
 
The grounds of Laufen Castle have shone in new splendour since March 2010. In addition to the new visitor centre, a children’s playground and the “Historama” (an interactive exhibition about Rhine Falls) were created. The new adventure trail with a double lift system and the Belvedere Trail provides barrier-free access to the natural spectacle of Rhine Falls.
