Lake Ritom (Lago Ritóm) lies in Val Piora above the Leventina and is an impressive mountain reservoir set in an alpine landscape. At an altitude of around 1850 m, the water ranges from deep blue to turquoise depending on the light – perfect for a leisurely walk along the shore or a break with a view.

Even the journey there is an experience: from Piotta, the Ritom–Piora funicular railway climbs up into Val Piora.
With a maximum gradient of 87,8 %, it is one of the steepest publicly accessible funicular railways in the world. Over a distance of 1’369 m, it climbs 786 metres to the Piora mountain station at 1’793 m above sea level. It was built in connection with the SBB hydroelectric power plant and has been open to the public since 1921.

At the top, a wonderful world of excursions begins, with numerous mountain lakes and hiking trails – Lake Ritom is an ideal starting point.

Good to know: A maximum of 50 people are transported per trip, and the funicular is not wheelchair accessible.
