Solothurn is considered Switzerland’s most beautiful Baroque city – compact, elegant and perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Along the Aare, you can walk among historic façades, little squares and a wonderful waterside atmosphere. A highlight is St. Ursus Cathedral (1762–1773), an impressive example of early Classicism – including the famous “eleven” details, such as three sets of eleven steps.

Solothurn is, in fact, the city of the magical number 11: for example, there is a clock with only 11 hours, and even the local “Öufi” beer alludes to it. By the river, it is also worth taking a detour to the Krummturm, a medieval defensive tower right on the Aare.

And if you want panoramic views after your city stroll, take the cable car from Oberdorf up to the Weissenstein – a fantastic viewpoint overlooking the city, the Swiss Plateau and the Alps.
