Beautiful circular hike with recurring panoramic views of Lake Maggiore. From Alpe di Neggia (1385 m above sea level), the route initially climbs quite steeply across the alpine pasture. You soon catch your first glimpses of Lake Maggiore. A moderate ascent then leads to Monte Gambarogno (1734 m above sea level), with views over the northern end of the lake (the Gulf of Locarno and Ascona). The trail then descends through alpine pastures and later through a landscape of ferns and birch trees to Alpe Cedullo. There, you can sample or purchase homemade specialities to take away, including goat’s cheese and lamb salami, as well as cakes and tarts. Shortly afterwards, you reach Rifugio Sant’Anna through beech forests, a small chapel with adjoining overnight accommodation. You can draw fresh water from a spring. The route continues downhill through beech forest to the junction towards Alpe di Neggio. From here, the path initially climbs steadily in switchbacks. It also crosses scree slopes in several places, although these are safe to walk across, until you reach the starting point at Alpe di Neggia once again.
