The hike begins spectacularly in Meiringen with a ride on the nostalgic funicular and views of the Reichenbach Falls. Not far from the mountain station, three viewing terraces offer breathtaking views of the waterfall and the Haslital valley. For Sherlock Holmes fans, this excursion is almost a must, as it was here that the famous detective challenged his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty to a fight – the fierce struggle ended with a fall into the depths, directly into this very waterfall! After leaving the Zwirgi viewing terrace, the trail climbs gently through alpine meadows and mountain forest. At Gschwantenmad, hikers are treated to a natural painting featuring the Rosenlaui Glacier and the Wellhorn massif. The hike ends in the village of Rosenlaui, whose venerable hotel has preserved much of its original character, with furnishings and comforts dating from 1861 and 1905, and no running water.
As an alternative route, you can climb from Willigen via the Sherlock Holmes Trail on the eastern side of the Reichenbach Falls to Zwirgi.
