The Brissago Islands (Isole di Brissago) are two green jewels in Lake Maggiore and among the most beautiful destinations in Ticino.
The Isola Grande is home to the botanical park of the Canton of Ticino: around 2,000 plant species from Mediterranean and subtropical regions on every continent grow across approximately 2.5 hectares.
The mild lake climate – the lake stores heat and the Alps shield the area from cold air – allows exotic species to thrive here. The second, smaller island (Isola Piccola / Sant’Apollinare) remains largely untouched and showcases the region’s original vegetation.

The islands are most beautifully reached by boat, for example from Ascona (approx. 15 min.) or from Locarno (approx. 40–60 min.), depending on the timetable.

The history is also fascinating: in 1885, Richard and Antoinette Fleming St. Léger bought the islands, and the Baroness began developing the garden with paths, soil and rare plants.
The estate later changed hands (including to Max Emden in 1927), and Isola Grande has been open to visitors since 1950.
