The city of Brycgstow (Old English for “the place at the bridge”) already existed at the beginning of the 11th century and, under Norman rule, acquired one of the strongest castles in southern England. In the 12th century, it became an important port city, particularly for trade with Ireland. In 1247, a new bridge was built, and the city expanded considerably. In 1373, it became a county. Bristol developed into a centre of shipbuilding.
